What is Debt?

I’ve gotten several email message and phones calls from people wanting to talk about debt. But then one interesting phone call came to me and I was asked. What is debt?

I thought of the question and tried to find a real good answer and this is what I said. “Debt is a way of over extending your spending before you receive money.” The person on the other side of the phone call was happy with the answer but then after I hung up. I started thinking about the question again.

We live, work and play in a society that except us to have everything today. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, but today and because of that we over extend ourselves. We have to have the best, the latest, the newest and grandest before anyone else. We have to show off, be better and be first.

Because of that thinking, we get ourselves in debt. We just have to…

But you must go deeper in your thinking. Is it worth it? Is being in debt worth all the glorified items in your life? Making payment, after payment and after payment for that item to please others or be first or just to have it.

I have to remind everyone that debt is not necessary in your life. It is not that important. You take debt out of your life and your stress level will go down a lot and I do mean a lot. Yes, I do understand that you have to have a car or a home or the clothes that you wear. But anything beyond that is not really necessary.

You must and work hard to get out of debt, no matter at what price. You must change your thinking and live within your means without getting into debt. Don’t worry, that sale will happen again in the future. That lamp, you will find it cheaper somewhere else. Life will go on without you even having to buy that product with a credit card.

I work with cash. If I don’t have the money, that means, I don’t need it. If I want a big ticketed item, I save. I never put it on credit and I don’t buy anything with credit. Yes, I do have a car loan but I double the car payment to get out of that debt faster, as fast as I can. But if I had credit card payment, I would not be able to do that. Can you?

But you must remember, Is it worth it?
